  • Find Something Positive about the situation:

Thanks for the comment.

Actually most of the suggestions I have practically used and evaluated methods. I have been through job loss threat, and I have faced difficult coworkers and I have been through situations where I was denied of promotion.

Especially controlling anger, Controlling anxiety when job loss was near the horizon and dealing with difficult coworkers are my personal experiences. And I am not sure how much more level practical experiences you are expecting.

I think there are two kinds of people in the world..one who easily get provoked and another one who knows how to provoke. Thats the way they are naturally. Most of the time the latter would seem "more successful" than the former and the former is would be more honest than latter. The former might lose the battle because of the emotional outbursts if they do not have a "good boss" who understands the reason for such.

Adjusting to some co-workers is somewhat impossible, imho. We can not deal with some personalities. If you find the "co-workers" environment as very unhealthy, one can survive there if and only if the boss understands her/his productivity and work ethics. If the boss is a worthless guy, then it is better find another job and get the hell out of there. Adjusting to the environment and getting rid of your genuine anger at some instigators are some things I would not like to do in my life. This is a very big world, and so find some other place at the earliest and leave this place which is not right for you! Again this is my personal opinion. This is what I really do in my personal/professional life! I do have a job all the time until now! :)

@Varun

I will tell you a story that happened last month in my work place. There were frictions between me and my coworker. That person was intimidated by me and started complaining each and everything I did to my boss, without even discussing that with me and screaming in front of everyone with anger etc..etc.

As a result, everyone thought that person as a person who dont know how to behave or what they call as unprofessional person.
'
In order to tackle the situation, my boss called me and told me, "you have to work with that person. There seems to be some trust issue. How would you build trust? think like that..and analyze the situation as a third person, and try to solve the problem".

I let the situation cool off for 10 days and thought in detail how to tackle the situation. Although the person complained about me, I never complained to anyone but wrote down what are the steps I should take to tackle the situation.

I had all the communication by email and gave the person all the material or gave introductions etc etc..

I praised the person for the help and thanked genuinely. I took the person to coffee and asked how can i help the person so that he/she will be successful as well the team will be successful. Whenever there is a team meeting, I gave my honest opinion and emphasized the need for team work and how each team members contribution is must.

When I showed genuine interest, that person responded and reciprocated and I learnt a biggest lesson in my life. Analyzing the situation as a third person and not taking anything personally will solve any problems in work place.

IMHO, all problems are solvable if we dont react instantly and approach it as the third person.

****IMHO, all problems are solvable if we dont react instantly and approach it as the third person. ***

We are all opinionated. Our opinions are based on our "unique" experiences. The experiences are sometimes very unique to some individuals. It is true all problems are solvable. There is a solution for every problem. There are ways to convince some individuals and, there is a way to please anyone. No argument there! There is certainly a way to make some people to understand some things by going "their way".

Here is the problem.. Is that worth spending some of our precious time to solve a "silly problem"?

In research we approach a problem by a first route. But on the way, there are some steps which are tedious and time-consuming in this route. We get frustrated. One could certainly attain the target in six-month time and with lots of effort. Yes there is a solution to the problem and it is solvable by going in this route. Now one can also think of a completely different route to get to the same target with two-months of your time. Which way I should choose? Should I stick to the tedious one? Probably not. I would choose the latter approach although I can attain the target with my former route as well.

Now, Is that worth spending that much time? So, we give up the former one and take up the latter route to attain the target more efficiently. Now you should apply the same logic with different people and different complex personalities to deal with and convincing some issues in "their way". Is that worth explaining someone 2+2 = 4 in a very time-consuming approach(NICER WAY)? I am not going to live that long. So, I would find another person who gets it faster. Yes, the former one will understand that if I approach in the "correct way" or "his way". But there is nothing fascinating here FOR ME to explain something trivial for hours together to make this particular guy to understand. Again we are not talking about kids or people who have difficulty in understanding. We are talking about guys with "arrogance" and "lack of open-mind" in understanding simple facts! I would be careful in spending my valuable time to solve some worthless problems as I think it is not worth solving it!

Take it easy, mukundammA!
