இங்கு நான் குறிப்பிட போவது எல்லாம் என்னுடைய சமீபத்திய இந்திய அனுபவத்தில் கண்டது. இது யாரையும் புண்படுத்த அல்ல.
ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இடைவேளைக்கு பிறகு நீங்கள் இந்தியா செல்கிறீர்கள் என்றால் நிறைய மாற்றங்கள் சந்திக்கலாம். உதாரணமாக, ஒரு பத்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன் இருந்த இந்திய ரோடுகளும் இப்போது இருக்கும் ரோடுகளும் வித்தியாசம். திருச்சிக்கு 3 மணி நேரத்தில் ரோடு வழியாக செல்ல முடியும். அதே போல சென்னைக்கு 6 மணி நேரத்தில் செல்லலாம். நிறைய வாடகை கார்கள் கிடைகின்றன. இங்கே இருப்பது போல நீங்கள் வாடகைக்கு எடுத்து கொண்டு சவாரி செய்யலாம். லெப்ட் ஹான்ட் டிரைவிங் தெரிந்து இருப்பின் ஒரு பிரச்னையும் இருப்பதில்லை.
நிறைய வெளி நாட்டு உணவகங்கள் பார்க்க முடியும். உதாரணமாக, இங்கு junk உணவகமாக கருதப்படும் "McDonalds, ChickFilA, PizzaHut, Dominos" எல்லாம் அங்கு ஹை எண்டு உணவகங்கள். மால்கள் நிறைய இருக்கின்றன, எல்லா மால்களிலும் இது போன்ற "junk high end" உணவகங்கள் பார்க்க முடியும். பெங்களூர் சென்றீர்கள் என்றால் MG ரோட்டில் எல்லா அமெரிக்க உணவகங்கள் உண்டு. "California Pizza Kitchen" , "Hard Rock Cafe "கூட பார்த்தேன். என் சொந்த ஊரான மதுரையில் கூட நிறைய மால்கள் பார்க்க முடிந்தது.
இப்படி ஒரு பக்கம் அமெரிக்க அல்லது மேலை நாட்டு தாக்கம் பார்க்க முடிந்தாலும், எனக்கு மிக பெரிய நெருடலாக, அல்லது மாற்றமாக இருந்தது. "எங்கும் எதிலும் பக்தி மயம்". நிறைய புது புது கோவில்கள் அவற்றில் எல்லாவற்றிலும் மக்கள் நிரம்பி வழிகிறார்கள். உதாரணமாக எந்த கோவில்களுக்கும் செல்ல முடியவில்லை. மதுரை மீனாக்ஷி அம்மன் கோவிலுக்கு செல்ல வேண்டும் என்றால் இப்பொழுதெல்லாம் Rs 250 அல்லது Rs 500 ருபாய் டிக்கெட் எடுத்து சென்றாலும் குறைந்தது அரைமணி நேரம் முதல் ஒரு மணி நேரம் வரை ஆகிறது. பொது தரிசனம் என்றால் எப்படியும் 2-3 மணி நேரம் சாதாரணம். இதே நிலை நான் சென்ற திருச்சி ஸ்ரீரங்கம், திருசெந்தூர், பழனி தெரிந்த பழைய கோவில்களிலும் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. சரி பெரிய கோவில்களை விட்டு விட்டு சின்ன கோவில்களுக்கு வருவோம். எனக்கு தெரிந்து மிக சிறிய கோவிலாக இருந்த பல கோவில்கள் எல்லாம் இப்போ மிக பிரபல கோவில்கள் ஆகி விட்டன. நிறைய புது கோவில்கள், அவர்ற்றுக்கு என்று பண்டிகை, பால்குடம், தீமிதி, முளைப்பாரி, விளக்கு பூஜை .... என்று சில பொது நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்துகின்றனர். அதற்க்கு அக்கம் பக்கம் வீடுகளில் வசூல் செய்கிறார்கள். பின்னர் பெரிய ஒலிபெருக்கி குழாய் கட்டி அம்மன் பாடல்களை அலற விடுகிறார்கள். நாள் முழுதும் காது பஞ்சர் ஆகும் வரை.
நிறைய குறி சொல்ல்பவர்கள், ஜாதகம் பார்பவர்கள், சாமி ஆடுபவர்கள் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. செவ்வாய் வெள்ளி என்றால் நிறைய பெண்கள் மஞ்சள், சிவப்பு சேலைகள் உடுத்தி கோவில்களுக்கு செல்வது பார்க்க முடிந்தது. நிறைய பெண்கள் ஓம்சக்தி கோவிலுக்கு என்று ஒரு சேலை வைத்து இருக்கிறார்கள், அதனை உடுத்துவதை பார்க்க முடிந்தது. மக்களின் நம்பிக்கையை நான் குறை சொல்ல வரவில்லை. ஆனால் எப்படி ஒரு பத்து வருட கால இடைவெளிக்குள் இப்படி பக்தி மாற்றம் என்று தெரியவில்லை.
இது, மதுரை, சென்னை, திருச்சி என்ற பல நகரங்களில் நான் பார்த்தது. பெங்களூரில் கூட வெள்ளி கிழமை அன்று கூட எல்லா கோவிலிலும் கூட்டம் நிரம்பி வழிகிறது பார்க்க முடிந்தது.
இது ஒரு பக்கம் என்றால் நிறைய புது மசூதிகளையும் பார்க்க முடிந்தது, சார்சுகளும் முளைத்து இருக்கின்றன.
மக்களுக்கு பக்தி அதிகரித்து விட்டதா, என்ன காரணம் என்று தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால் ஒன்று மட்டும் நிச்சயம், இந்த பக்தி மோகத்தால் நிறைய குறி சொல்பவர்கள், ஜாதகம் பார்பவர்கள் நிறைய பயன் அடைகிறார்கள் என்று மட்டும் அறிய முடிகிறது. எனக்கு தெரிந்தே ஒருவர் ஜாதகம் பார்த்து பார்த்தே பெரிய கோடீஸ்வரனாகி விட்டார். அவர் பையனுக்கு அதே தொழில் பழகி விட்டார், அவரும் தன பங்குக்கு பெரிய கோடீஸ்வரனாகி விட்டார். எல்லா ஜாதகதிர்க்கும் எதோ ஒரு பரிகாரம் என்று கோவில்களுக்கு போக சொல்கிறார்கள். அதனால் தான் ஒரு வேலை கோவில்களில் கூட்டம் நிரம்பி வழிகிறதோ, தெரியவில்லை.
நான் சாமி கும்பிடுவதை எதிர்ப்பவள் அல்ல. கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை எனக்கும் உண்டு. ஆனால் எங்கும் எதிலும் பக்தி மயம், எது செய்வதென்றாலும் ஜாதகத்தை பார்த்து விட்டு செய்வது, பரிகாரம் செய்வது என்பதிலெல்லாம் எனக்கு கொஞ்சம் கூட உடன்பாடு இல்லை.
எங்கே போய் முடியுமோ இது தெரியவில்லை.

எல்லோரும் நிறைய தப்பு செய்கிறார்கள். சாமி அந்த தப்புகளையெல்லாம் மன்னித்துவிடும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் கோவிலுக்குப் போகிறார்கள். அவரவர் வினைகளை அவரவரே அனுபவிக்கவேண்டும் என்ற அடிப்படை ஆன்மீகக் கருத்தைக் கூட சாமி கும்பிட்டால் மாற்றி விடலாம் என்று நம்புகிறார்கள்.

Great post abt your visit to india.
One thing I noticed here is it is commercialization everywhere.
recently spiritual magazines have increased in progression, so many new temples have been extrapolated which lack sanctity. Temples are horribly crowded and it has become a very tough and long procedure to visit temples. as you have rightly pointed otu, the astrologers, ppl around temple are benefitting immensely due to this. almost minting money. it is sad.
kaliyugam, sins have increased drastically i guess. I know some NRIs who visit india only to perform homams, rituals with double or triple the usual cost!
One reason for this proliferation of bakti show is Hindutva emergence in TN. Their motto is: a pillayar temple at every corner. Although every long street has one, the meaning of the motto is to increase the presence of Hinduised society. Their belief is that the more the number the more attraction for the people to Hindu religion away from other religions. Hindutva leaders say it is their reaction to the aggressive campaign of other 2 religions in TN which started long ago and goes on. If Hindus continue to be inactive, the others will overtake TN. Hence, aggressive campaign has been launched for Hinduism. Proliferation of variety of temple rituals, conducting annual jamborees in Temples etc. are new phenomena and cleverly created from low key to high pitch aimed to overwhelm the general culture. Such overwhelming is essential. The bakthi magazines are full of people who subscribe to such Hindutva ideology.
Now, the other two begin to react i.e. to rejuvenate their campaign as it is needed for their survival. There were no mosques in front of Mattuththavani when you left Madurai: now three have come up although muslim population near the bus station is almost nil. They have done that out of fear that the land will be encroached by temples or churches. In new township like Surya nagar etc. you find churches and mosques coming first.
People are mobs. A mob, by definition, can't think for itself. It survives on imiatation only. One imitates the other. The one who doesn't is looked down upon suspiciously. All of us don't want to stand away from the crowd to become suspicious. To part of the crowd gives one emotional as well as physical security. Further, we suspect ourselves if we don't follow the crowd: What's wrong with me? That explains why we find more and more people think it compulsory to go and participate. The bakhti they show, is temporary and false.
The soothsayers milk the mob psychology because the calculated crowd has already created fears. On fears religion has to live. More religion, more fears.
