I am not sure I agree with this post. I dont think I need to learn about honesty from american culture/system? That is really INSULTING for people like me. I am honest here!

Was s n ow d e n NOT honest?

Was he rewarded for his honesty?

Teaching children is one thing. What those children become later is another thing.

I think you need to re-define what is honesty!

The topic of this post is Teaching good morals to kids and making them follow it.
I am talking about teaching good morals to kids and your point of view is about politicians/goventment not being honest.

Have you seen anywhere in western countries encouraging kids not being honest. Have you seen any western parent encouraging dishonesty.

For survival people try to deviate being dishonest and it is becoming common in office politics. But if found/ proven it is considered as offense and concerned people are expelled from their respective jobs.

In western countries they try to preach honesty in schools and even adults lying for small small things doesn't happen. Until there is a life and death or survival problem, I find most of the westerners being honest.

***In western countries they try to preach honesty in schools ***

How about in India? The children are NOT??

I was preached honesty in my schools and by my parents as well at home. I did not grow up in America. Are you telling me the India I am talking about, is DEAD already?

***even adults lying for small small things doesn't happen.***

You must be kidding! I have seen the "other Americans" whom you did not have a chance to work with or interact with. They lie heartlessly and shamelessly. You would not even know they are lying as they don't have any "guilty conscience" to lie. BTW, I am not saying Indians wont lie or any sweeping statements like that. I disagree with what you are theorizing based on your experience with whoever you interacted with in the US. Americans are better liars than Indians and so you would not be able to figure out that they are lying.

Well, we need to disagree to agree on this and move on! :)

How many schools have good morals class in India. From what I learnt from my sister in law who is a teacher in a matriculation school, Those classes are replaced by other extra classes, which primarily focus on memorizing chapters. I doubt nowadays they teach even extra curricular activities at school like sewing, music and games. I hear that in lower grades like 1-5 they might have PT periods but, in higher grades like 9-12 there are no extra curricular activities and no moral classes. I am talking about govt schools and matriculation schools and not CBSC a schools. I don't know what they do there. If someone know please let me know

You and me are still talking about our school times in which atleast the kids were taught moral lessons in schools. And kids were taught honesty when we were kids by our parents. As I mentioned in th post, nowadays I observed the kids are not taught honesty by parents.

Regarding Americans lying and acting like not lying. I probably have not come across many like that. In the research field where I am in, if you lie and publish a paper your degree and career will be in jeopardy. I am not saying that they are mahatma's and they do lie, but not for small small things.

As you said we should agree that we have disagreement regarding this and move on :)

Your concern is right. In our schools nowadays, students don’t learn or aren’t taught morals. Their story book may contain morals but they are read for pleasure, not for edification. I said in my argument in mintamil recently that Tamils in TN have a helluva lot of moral books like Thrukkural, Naladiyar, Athichoodi and the like. But they are leant merely to quote in lectures in order to win awards or applause only.
As a child, I had such non-detailed story books of morals. I learnt little morals from them; so also, my class mates. My father got angry when I told lies to escape his wrath. But, later on, I understood he was against lying only in so far as my act offended his dignity; not against lying per se. A child shouldn’t cheat on his parents – was his opinion. It implied he can at other places with other people.  My mother insisted on me getting rich by all means - fair or foul, crooked or straight makes no difference to her as long as we got our bagful. Teachers lie to schools; schools lie to DEOs; DEOs lie to District Collectors, DCs lie to the Education Secretary and the ES lies to the CM and the CM lies to people. Our current CM keeps the fact about her health tight secret and wants to show to people all is hunky dory with her.
All this is made aware to children as they grow up. You are worried that this sort of individual culture will cascade up or down, thereby bedevilling society as a whole. Not to worry:: the society has already gone to dogs.
I agree with you that the westerners are better than us. Their children get to know all that is necessary in morals. Transparency International reports and Corruption Indices, rank India among the lowest countries. Western countries fare far better than us in such charts. No one is 100% perfect; and, the Westerners don’t have snow-white purity. But they don’t make a virtue of being corrupt. We do. Here, in India, fair is foul; and foul is fair - and all this is quickly passed to children by both parents and schools either directly or indirectly. These elders indicate to the children, as my father did it to me, cheat all but not us.
